What’s in YOUR Wallet… A Discover card?

You just spent the better part of the last 20 hours on airplanes, making connections, and sitting in airports waiting for delayed connections, and now you are finally in Roma. As you are heading to the train station for your final leg of your journey to the 50th Il Gruppo Reunion you stop by an ATM to get some Euros. You insert your brand new Capital One Debit card, put in your PIN and….the card is not accepted. You grumble and reach for your Capital One Credit Card. You were trying to avoid using your credit card with the cash advance fees and interest, but hey, you need some cash now. Same thing happens. You move to another ATM, perhaps there is an issue with that bank. It’s the same story at the next ATM, and the next ATM, and the one after that. Frustrated you go to the airport café for a cappuccino and a cornetto. “Sorry, we don’t accept that card here, do you have any cash?” What is going on? The sign on the counter says they accept credit cards!
Here’s the back story:
In 2025, Capital One completed its purchase of Discover Financial Services. This means that Discover is now part of Capital One. Capital One is also switching its debit and ATM cards from Mastercard to the Discover payment network. Discover cardholders are now customers of the combined company, although their cards and accounts continue under the Discover brand.
The other part of this is that customers who have a Capital One card may soon find that their cards (newly issued or some have been prematurely issued) will be switched from a Visa or Mastercard to the Discover network.
The card will still say Capital One BUT the Visa/Mastercard logo will be replaced with a Discover logo.
While the Discover network is widely accepted in the US, it is NOT widely accepted internationally. Discover operates its own card network, but most European merchants and banks are integrated with Visa and Mastercard’s infrastructure. Many point‑of‑sale (POS) terminals and acquiring banks simply don’t route Discover transactions, so even if a merchant wants to accept it, they often can’t.
Capital One may try to woo vendors to its new network, but that will take time.
If you plan to use a Capital One card while traveling to Italy or any place else in Europe in the near future (like, this November 2026), be aware that if your card carries the Discover logo, there is a good chance your card will not be accepted. Debit cardholders are already finding that they cannot use their card to get cash from ATMs while traveling in Europe. The switch to the Discover network will happen gradually, and Capital One has not announced a schedule for moving existing accounts. The following Capital One card products are now, or sometime in the future, be issued on the Discover network:
-
Debit cards
-
Venture Rewards
-
VentureOne Rewards
-
Savor Cash Rewards
-
SavorOne Cash Rewards
-
Quicksilver Cash Rewards
-
QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards
The rollout of the premium Capital One Venture X card has yet to be announced. There is speculation that they will leave that one on the Visa network, but nothing definite has been announced by Capital One.
So, here’s hoping you all have alternative cards or are comfortable using cash. Or, consider Wise or Revolut, both are commonly accepted in Europe.
